Simultaneous interpretation is highly specialised, requiring accurate and complete oral translation, at the same rate of speech as the speaker, with an interval of only a few seconds.

  • Aplomb’s simultaneous interpreters must have complete mastery of their language pairs and an understanding of significant cross-cultural and local nuances.
  • In addition, Aplomb individually appraises each project to accurately assign interpreters with the correct expert technical knowledge of the conference subject.
  • Interpreters are highly trained and always work in pairs as the concentration levels are extremely demanding.
  • Not all interpreters can provide simultaneous interpreting. Aplomb’s interpreters are assessed to ensure they demonstrate the professional skills and experience necessary to meet your needs.

It is important that simultaneous interpreting assignments are arranged in advance as appropriate equipment, including translation booths, headphones, microphones and speakers, needs to be installed and tested.

How Simultaneous Interpretation Works

  1. The speaker of the floor language talks into a microphone (this is called the floor mic or the floor feed).
  2. The floor feed is broadcast (usually wirelessly) to the interpreter, who listens through headphones in a soundproof booth at the back of the room.
  3. The interpreter listens to the floor feed and simultaneously translates into the target language, speaking into a microphone, which is broadcast wirelessly to the audience, who wear specialised headphones to hear the proceedings in their native language.

Interpreters and interpretation equipment are selected and designed to work together for each specific interpreting assignment.  Specialist background subject material and glossaries are provided for interpreters in advance of the project. It is as important for the interpreter to have expert knowledge in the correct subject field as it is to have simultaneous interpreting experience in the correct language pairs. For over 26 years, Aplomb has been trusted to successfully match our professional interpreters to the discerning needs of our global clients.
